Winter Shore Fishing

Monday, February 02, 2009

I got a call from Terry around 9:30am on Monday morning while I was working in the office. He called to let me know he was thinking of playing “hookie” with work since last week was a major haul of work. I was already busy at work and knew I had a few things I needed to get done that day but agreed to discuss possibly plans around noon. With the thought of taking a half day to fish and enjoy this amazing weather mother nature has been giving us I knew I needed to get things wrapped up. It’s funny how much quicker I worked and completed tasks knowing if I got them done I could go fishing. Well by 12:30 Terry and I agreed to meet up at a local sandwich shop in Del Mar to grab a quick sandwich to go and head to the beach for some shore fishing. We had no idea what to expect besides very warm beach weather and very cold water temperatures. Neither one of us had shore fished since the fall but we figured worst case scenario would be being outside instead of working.

We got down to the beach, had a cold beer, a great sandwich and studied the shore line for underwater holes where fish might gather. There was only one nice hole along the entire stretch of beach breaks in Del Mar. We rigged up and began fishing with the warm sun on our faces. It was already a great day and not one fish had been caught. We both missed a couple of strikes and finally Terry laid into a nice Perch. Over the next 10 minutes the fishing just seemed to get better and better to the point of catching a Perch with almost every cast.

The bite seemed to last about an hour with probably 50 Barred Surf Perch being released along with a few Silver Perch and one decent Corbina to round out the day caught by yours truly. The majority of these Perch were all decent size with a nice amount of what we call “slabs” in the mix. “Slabs” are the larger sized perch that can put up a much better fight.

Overall it was a day to remember for a while. It’s not too often you get into a wide open bite of nicer Perch in February with 80 degree heat, or any other time of the year for that matter. Hopefully I get another Monday in the near future like this one. Life’s too short, sometimes you just gotta go!
