The day started out with a very cold but clear morning with buddies Terry Hastings and Bob Destremps. This was the first Rock Cod trip for the boat Reel Hooker so I was excited to see what we could get. Looking back at downtown San Diego revealed some amazing lights which a camera can never capture properly. As we got past the mouth of the harbor we could clearly see all of the lights along the coast of Baja like I have never seen before. The Coronado Islands looked like they were only a few miles away despite being over 15 miles away. We arrived on the South 9 Mile Bank at sunrise and began to meter the bottom for some good structure.

Once we located what seemed to be a nice drop off at 400 feet with some good bottom structure I had Terry and Bob drop down to see if anything was down there. Both anglers were instantly rewarded with fish as soon as they hit the bottom. I quickly dropped my rod down too and preceded to make it a triple hookup on some tasty Rock Cod. Here is a few photos of the catch…

Bob’s personal best Lingcod which weighed in at 9lbs. All other Lingcod were safely released.

A really nice sized Vermilion Rock Cod which lists high on the table fare...my favorite of the Rock Cod.

Once we drifted off the spot I pulled up again to see if we could keep getting some dinner, and we did. Many times we had triple hookups on the Rock Cod which made for a great day! The sun was out, the wind stayed calm and the fish cooperated to make it a great day with great company on the big pond!

Terry with a nice Yellowtail Rockfish.

We were done around noon and heading in with the Rock Fish in my new Fish Cooler Bag iced down and ready to hit the grill!

Until next time, tight lines.
