Robert & Laura

Friday, March 06, 2009

The weather reports for Friday were looking a little grim with the prediction of a little rain, but worst of all some serious wind. Fishing the bay with rain is not all that bad since there is a T-Top on the boat. But wind can really stir up the bottom and make it very difficult to drift the way you want to. To say the least I was a little worried about what weather might present itself for Robert and Laura. If it was just myself fishing I would not care much. But in this case it was paid customers and I really wanted the best for them.

Arriving at the bay to meet Robert and Laura I was pleasantly surprised with dead calm wind and a very high tide. At 6am sharp Robert and Laura showed up and we headed off to get some live sardines for bait. Once we got our bait I shot over to the first spot I wanted to try out with the outgoing tide. I gave Laura a bait rod and Robert a plastic to fish while I got his bait rod ready. Before I even got Laura’s bait to the bottom Robert was hooked up! In short order he repeated the same thing 3 times in a row. By the third fish Laura hooked into the biggest bass of the morning (all 10 minutes so far) and brought in a really nice Sand Bass! So I had her drop down another live bait to see if another big boy would move through. But again, Robert continued to be on fire and kept pulling in Sand Bass with every cast! After a few more minutes I put Laura on a rod with a plastic and put away the bait rod. After working out a few small details on working the plastic, she started to quickly catch up to Robert. The bite was wide open and they put me to work releasing one bass after another. On top of this amazing fishing day, the weather was perfect! Here is a shot of the bay with downtown San Diego in the background.

Not only was the weather good and the fishing great, but I swear there was only 2 other boats in the entire bay. We were alone at our spot with a day that I would have never predicted! This bite continued for another hour of non stop catch and release of Sand Bass. Here is Robert with a nice quality Sand Bass.

After an hour of a solid Sand Bass bite it started to mix in with some Spotted Bay Bass. The bite continued for another hour before it slowed from wide open to really good. As the morning progressed the wind stayed down but some very gray clouds would pass by every once in a while. They added a chill to the air but looked great going across the bay!

Around 10:30 am the bite slowed down a bit more so we decided to try a few other spots while heading towards the back for some noon Spottied Bay Bass fishing. As we passed by Bouy #22 we found some seals who were enjoying the weather too.

Once we got towards the back of the bay they started to pick off some nice Spotties as we drifted around. At this point the weather had finally changed with a bit more clouds and quite a bit more wind! But both Robert and Laura just threw on more clothes and kept picking away at the bass. Some areas would be a bit slow while other areas produces doubles for them. There was some great friendly competition between them to see who was going to be buying lunch that day. I would have to say that Robert caught a few more fish (only a few) more than Laura. But Laura brought in the biggest Sand Bass and I believe the biggest Spotted Bay Bass for the day. So you decide who wins!

Overall it was one of the best Bass bites I have seen in SD Bay in a while. With countless double hookups it was hard to keep track of how many fish they caught. Overall I would say they probably got between 40-50 fish including Spotted Bay Bass, Sand Bass, Mackerel and one Lizard Fish. I really enjoyed their company and their fishing enthusiasm. I have a feeling they enjoyed it even more than me.

Until the next report, tight lines!
