Meehan Bay Fishing

Friday, January 15, 2010

After years of sharing my fish reports with David Meehan and even him helping install some of my boat electronics, he finally joined me for a short bay bass fishing trip!

We met up just before 6:30am at a very calm and quite Shelter Island launch ramp. Knowing that David had a work appointment at 11am I focused the first part of the morning at the mouth of the bay hoping for a good bite. The bite was a bit slow, but the sunrise was nice as always!

Dave’s first Sand Bass was a bit small so I quickly threw it back before taking a picture knowing he would catch something a bit bigger...he wasn’t so sure though. With a slow bite I was able to pick off a few regular sized Sandies before David locked into his second Sand Bass which we definitely stopped to take a picture of!

As the morning progressed the sun warmed us up nicely while we fished under calm conditions. Dave quickly learned how to work the lure properly, unfortunately the bass were experiencing more lock jaw.

Despite it being what we call a slow day in the bay (10 fish), it was great to get on the water as always. There was consistent entertainment with 4 different Navy ships coming into the harbor and a few seals passing by.

After a few more fish it was time to shoot over and drop David off at the dock so he could start his work day. I scrubbed the boat down and did a few more casts for one more Sand Bass then called it a day myself.

It was great to get out on the water with David and hopefully it won’t be the last time!

Until the next report, tight lines!
Captain Peter
